    Description: : Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) can serve as a useful tool to treat musculoskeletal problems of the ankle that, in combination with the proper history and physical exam of the anatomical structures, helps to minimize invasive intervention to the common ankle pathologies. This experience intends to teach physiatrists the principles of an osteopathic structural examination of the ankle and foot in combination with their usual physical exam to identify soft tissue abnormalities of tenderness, asymmetry, restriction of motion, and tissue texture changes that may respond to manual treatment. Based on the findings from the structural examination and participant’s experience in manual treatment, the participant will then learn principles of soft tissue techniques, such as muscle energy and articulatory techniques as indicated for key anatomical considerations of the calcaneus, tibia on talus, navicular, cuboid, cuneiforms, and fibular head.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Participants will learn the essentials of performing an osteopathic structural exam for the leg, ankle, and foot.
    • Participants will learn how to identify functional musculoskeletal abnormalities (somatic dysfunctions) of the calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuneiforms, cuboid, fibular head, and tibia that can contribute to foot and ankle pain.
    • Provide introductory OMT experience of articulatory techniques to the calcaneus, navicular, cuneiforms, and cuboid and muscle energy techniques to the tibia on talus and fibular head.
    • Participants will enhance their understanding of anatomy through the hands-on improvement of their osteopathic palpation and manipulation skills.
